Take them off a person, and they can't feed, thrive, or reproduce.

A dog or cat simply isn't a viable home for them. The blood is different, the fur is a different texture, and the body temperature and environment don't match what the louse needs. So even if a louse somehow landed on your pet, it couldn't set up shop or pass anything along to the next person.

But wait — don't pets get "lice" too?
